What is Handbike?
Handbike is a transportation medium (bicycle operated by hands or in other models of assistance such as hybrid or electric) for people with physical disabilities, as well as people with different mobile conditions such as obesity, elderly age and even recreational use.
The first hand bike prototypes date back to the early twentieth century, although the first bicycles for the handicapped appeared in the 1960s. In the following decades, the tandem was adopted for the blind and finally the hand bike for people in need of wheel chairs appearing the 1990s. The first appearance of cycling in the International Paralympics in route form was produced in Seoul 1988, with the track modality added in Atlanta 1996.
At Handbike México we have at our disposal the design and engineering infrastructure as well as the production facilities for the building and massification of the product.
The people that participates in a sport that requires a great deal of work on the legs, such as jogging and riding a bicycle, have very little options of a cross-training that offers aerobic conditioning that rests on the legs. The arm-operated bicycle offers a real cross-training because it allows you to use your arms to develop cardiovascular resistance and improve your consumption of oxygen during exercise.
“We are a group of great people looking forward to social wellbeing, including those people with different capabilities to an ordinary practice of life.”
“Concept of social diversity, in which it is not discarded the existence of social stratifications in different arenas and economical situations, looks forward that all of them have the same freedom of choice and to be able to have participation in everything they propose themselves.”
Why talk about inclusion?
The option of inclusion begins with the recognition of the dignity of persons and thus, the respect for their freedom and self determination. In consequence, a central aspect of this perspective is the recognition and restitution of the full rights of the person: to life, to work, to education, to health (UN & MPS 2008).
HANDBIKE is a shared project where enterprises, foundations, schools, organizations, investigators can be integrated as well as all kinds of volunteers.
